1  Starship reaches orbit for the first time and releases 26 Starlink satellites

On its 14th test flight, SpaceX's giant rocket made it into orbit and deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites. The flight ended early, coming down after about 90 minutes rather than the planned 10 hours, but it still cleared a major hurdle. NASA is counting on Starship to land astronauts on the Moon for Artemis, and a failure here would have squeezed an already tight schedule. Watch the launch.

2  Gentoo penguins turn out to be four species, one of them new to science

A closer look at gentoo penguins showed they are really four separate species, and one had never been described before. It is the first new penguin species named in more than 100 years. The news comes with a warning: researchers expect three of the four, including the newcomer, to lose much of their habitat to climate change. Only the southern gentoo in Antarctica may gain ground.

3  Wallpaper that pulls moisture from the air and turns it into electricity

Researchers built a paper wallpaper lined with tiny moisture-powered generators that draw water vapor from indoor air and produce a steady voltage. A full sheet with 1,596 units ran a wireless keyboard and lowered the room's humidity at the same time. It is far from powering appliances, but it could one day keep small sensors and thermostats running without batteries.

4  A 1,000-year-old remedy slows down antibiotic resistance

Scientists remade Bald's eyesalve, a 10th-century mixture of garlic, onion, cow bile, and wine. It damaged bacterial membranes, disrupted how bacteria signal each other, and broke down the protective films they form. Most notably, bacteria took much longer to become resistant to it. The goal is not a home brew but a safer lab-made treatment built on its key ingredients.
